Whether you are going through a conception journey, pregnant, or in the postpartum period, its important to do what you can to look after yourself. You shouldn’t feel ashamed, or guilty making yourself a priority too. If we look after ourselves, we are able to be the best version to our babies.

We are important too, we deserve it and we are worth it.

There are so many simple but often underestimated things we can do or plan ahead to allow us to get that much needed time to care of ourselves as mothers.

Some self care practices include:

Eat a nutritious or balanced meal: this will give you energy and the nutrients that your body needs to heal and recover. And don’t forget that water for hydration and electrolytes.

Rest: your body has done something amazing. And has been through a whole journey. It is crucial for not only physically but mentally to rest and recover. Seek and accept help if you need it to allow yourself to get the rest and sleep you need.

Personal hygiene: take a bath or shower, brush your hair and teeth, and don’t be afraid to hop straight back into those pyjamas!

Get some fresh air and vitamin D: just 15 minutes boosts your immune system and activates those happy hormones.

Gentle Movement: when you feel up to it and making sure you’re listening to your body. Try some stretching, yoga, walking, pelvic floor exercises. Be mindful of how it feels within your body.

Take 10 mins to do something you enjoy: watch your favourite show, paint, journal, meditate, read a book or listen to music.

Talk to a friend or family member: make sure it’s someone who will brighten your day. And someone who will not just talk about the baby but how you’re feeling too.

Set boundaries and get comfortable with saying no: it’s okay to say no to visitors, take a break from social media, or not reply instantly to every message or call.

Ask for help and accept when you need it: delegate tasks and divide up duties. Utilise your village, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
